Server in Safe Mode

I've been exploring the software for some time now - and I want to find out what problems I might get when I upload to my server.
My ISP has the following help note:
"Can I run my scripts outside of Safe Mode?
Solution:No. We use safe mode on our shared server range in order to protect both you and our other customers on the same server"
Frankly, I don't understand this, but before I simply push on - is "Safe" mode likely to cause any problems?
